5/21/2020 Happy World Oceans day!
This Monday, June 8th we celebrate oceans around the world. This is a great week to read a book about oceans, go beachcombing, and enjoy our life here on an island.
The first story is a biography about Jacques Cousteau. He is a famous French conservationist, researcher, inventor, scientist, photographer and filmmaker. He studied the ocean for most of his life and shared what he found with people around the world through his television series and books. He worked with an engineer, Émile Gagnan, to create an air regulator called the Aqua-Lung. This allowed people to breathe while underwater. Jacques Cousteau worked to protect the ocean and marine life. Learn more about his life by watching this story.
Are you up for a challenge? See if you can find these sea creatures on your next visit to the beach. This identification chart was provided by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
Song of a Whale is a new chapter book written by Lynne Kelly. This amazing book follows Iris, a deaf middle-school student, who uses her knowledge of radios and technology to help a whale who cannot speak to other whales. This is one of the best chapter books I have read this year. I highly recommend reading this inspiring story!
